IRIS GUEST - BEN PETERS – 01 OCTOBER 2011
As we get closer to opening night we’ve been publishing a number of short interviews with our visiting filmmakers who will be joining us in Cardiff. This time it’s Ben Peters with his short Downing.

1. Can you tell us a little about the making of your shortlisted film.
Downing was my first short and a great experience. From the initial pre-production meetings through to the final picture lock and grade. As a pop promo director it was fun to shoot something not only with dialogue but an engaging narrative and a great cast.
2. Has the film played in many festivals and what’s the response been to it so far?
We played at Rhode Island back in August which is an Academy Award qualifying festival (one of only 60). Beyond that, Amsterdam have requested a screener so it looks like we're getting some positive word of mouth. Downing is still relatively young in its festival life (hard to believe!) so being shortlisted for the Iris Prize is an incredible hounour for it and really validates all the hard work that the cast and crew put in to make it happen.
3. Which filmmaker (or artist) has most inspired you and why?
Gary Oldman, Spike Lee, Darren Aronofsky, principally because I regard them as directors who have a strong idea of a story they want to tell and tell it.
4. Are you looking forward to coming to Cardiff?
Very much so, it will be the furthest west I've been in the UK!
5. What would winning the Iris Prize mean to you?
As well as the recognition, the ability to work on more narrative projects is something you can't underestimate. Downing has been a great step for me in developing my narrative storytelling skills and I can't wait for the next project!
6. What’s your idea of good night out?
Nandos and cineworld unlimited!
