Iris Prize Guidelines

Submissions for 2008 are now closed. We will be accepting submissions for the 2009 Iris Prize Festival in January 2009.


All entries should be by, for, about or of interest to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or intersex audiences and must have been completed within 2 years prior to the prize deadline (June 27th, 2008). Any short film which meets the prize criteria will be eligible for Iris. Any feature films must have been completed within 2 years of the Iris Prize Festival Dates (October 2nd – 4th).

A selection of 30 short films and 10 features films will be selected to screen as part of the Iris Prize Festival, which will be held in Cardiff, Wales (UK) from October 2nd 4th 2008.

All short film entries must be no longer than 35 minutes in length.

Any film shortlisted for Iris 2007 is ineligible to compete for future Iris Awards.

A completed entry form and submission fee must accompany each submission. If you are submitting more than one entry, please supply a separate submission form for each entry.

VHS and DVD (NTSC or PAL) are the preferred formats for submission viewing copies. All viewing copies must be clearly labelled with the title of the work, running time, filmmaker’s name and contact details. Please test consumer burned DVD on numerous DVD players prior to submitting your work. If shortlisted, your must submit your work on film (35mm only), Digi Beta or Beta SP PAL (we cannot exhibit on NTSC formats) and DVD.

Please ensure that you submit everything listed on the Check List noted at the bottom of the submission form. Production information, Director’s Biography and image, and film stills are essential publicity materials. Please ensure that all images are of the highest quality possible. Any images emailed must be JPEG or TIFF format and 300dpi (dots per inch).

Updated versions of submitted work will not be accepted after the submission deadline date, Friday, June 27th 2008.

The Iris Prize accepts no responsibility for the loss or damage of any submission viewing copies or supporting materials, or any exhibition material whilst in transit.

Works in languages other than English must be subtitled for exhibition. English subtitles are strongly preferred for submission viewing copies, but works without subtitles will be accepted for consideration.

Successful entrants will be informed that their work has been shortlisted by early September 2008.

All shortlisted work will be exhibited during the three day Iris Prize Festival in Cardiff from October 2nd – 4th, 2008.

All shortlisted entrants are strongly encouraged to attend the Iris Prize Festival in Cardiff.

The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

If you wish to have your preview tape or DVD, or any supporting promotional material, returned to you, please include a stamped addressed envelope along with your submission (the Iris Prize will retain preview tapes or DVDs of shortlisted entries).

The Iris Prize will send an acknowledgement email once your entry has been received.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, June 27th, 2008. The Late Deadline is July 14th 2008. No work will be accepted after this date.

All entries must obtain the appropriate copyright clearances. Failure to do so will result in the entry being disqualified from the Iris Prize.

By submitting your work to the Iris Prize, you grant the Iris Prize a non-exclusive licence to use an excerpt of your submission to two minutes in length for promotional purposes only, including but not limited to internet and television broadcast.

It is the intention of the Iris Prize to compile all a selection of the shortlisted entries for the Prize to be made available as a package to festivals worldwide to promote Iris and the shortlisted entries. By entering your work, you agree to have your entry included as part of the package (exceptions can be made if distribution rights have been sold in certain territories).
